Hi! My name is Shelly Coberly, author of the book, Sweet Pea! Thank you for stopping by our website! I feel blessed to have grown up with two loving parents and a big loving family. They all mean the world to me. I believe that foundation gave me the dream to have my own babies to love and do my best to raise good humans. The book Sweet Pea is a story about a sweet little girl who loves learning and playing with mommy and daddy. She is excited to learn about the world around her.
I have always written songs and poems. One day I wrote a poem detailing some of the daily activities I enjoyed with my daughter Ainsley. She was 18 months old at the time and I was about 6 months pregnant with my son Aiden. Stay tuned for subsequent books commemorating our family adventures together.
Initially I wanted to illustrate the book myself. I created some drawings of a green “sweet pea” character. Eventually, I decided that it would be best to have the main character look like the little girl who inspired the book. I noticed the drawings of a high school acquaintance for another children’s book. Dave Arnold along with Matthew Trupia worked to take my vision and create beautiful illustrations for Sweet Pea.
I never expected it to be as challenging or time consuming to create a children’s book from start to finish. It is truly incredible to see your vision come to life! I know the history of, and the work behind, each page. I had no idea where to start and questioned everything along the way. It is worth it to see a project like this come to fruition. I would encourage other authors and artists to simply go for it!
Our goal with this project is to donate a portion of the proceeds to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation. There are stories that I hear about children struggling that pierce my heart. I realize this may sound impossible, but I have a dream to sell a million copies! To put my book in the hands of little ones everywhere to enjoy while donating to charity would be the ultimate dream come true!
